Vegan Cream of Celery Substitute Recipe

Making your own vegan version of this pantry staple is a breeze, requiring just a few minutes on the stovetop. With a handful of simple ingredients (no raw cashews or cashew cream here!), you’ll have the ideal creamy celery soup replacement ready to go. 

Use this dairy-free cream of celery soup just as you would with the canned version from the grocery store in your favorite holiday casserole recipes. Or for a light lunch, simply add water or vegetable stock for a vegan celery soup. Garnish with celery leaves or fresh parsley and serve with warm crusty bread for dipping.

Ingredients for Vegan Cream of Celery Soup Substitute

You will need the following:

  • 3 tablespoons vegan butter
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup celery, finely chopped
  • 1/2 cup mild-flavored plant-based milk, such as oat milk, soy milk, or unsweetened almond milk (coconut milk is not recommended!)
  • 1/2 cup vegan chicken-style broth, or vegetable broth
  • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1/8 teaspoon garlic powder

How to Make Vegan Cream of Celery Substitute

STEP ONE: Heat butter in a small saucepan over medium heat. 

STEP TWO: When the butter is melted, whisk in the flour until the consistency is smooth.

STEP THREE: Add the celery, plant milk, chicken-style broth, onion powder, salt, black pepper, and garlic powder.

STEP FOUR: Bring to a boil, whisking frequently for 2 minutes, until thickened. Let the soup cool and it’s ready to go!

Quick Tips

  • Use a mini chopper or food processor to make quick work of finely chopping the celery stalks. 
  • For an extra creamy soup, use an immersion blender or regular blender to break down the celery pieces after cooking.
