What type of apples should I use?

Granny Smith apples are the best option for this recipe. They have a nice, firm texture and tartness of flavor that hold up well to baking.

Do I have to peel the apples?

Technically, no but I always do and it doesn’t take more than a few minutes with a standard hand peeler. The reason why I prefer to use peeled apples is that leaving the skins on can give a chewiness to the texture of the filling.

Ingredients for Apple Crisp:

For the streusel topping:

1/2 cup all-purpose flour

1/2 cup old-fashioned oats

1/2 cup light brown sugar

1/2 teaspoon baking powder

1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/8 teaspoon sea salt

1/3 cup vegan butter

For the filling:

4 large Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored, and thinly sliced

3 tablespoons vegan butter, softened

2 tablespoons all-purpose flour

1 tablespoon lemon juice

3 tablespoons unsweetened almond milk

1/2 teaspoon vanilla bean paste

1/4 cup light brown sugar

1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/8 teaspoon sea salt

How to make Apple Crisp:

Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.

For the streusel topping:

Into a medium-size mixing bowl, add all topping ingredients. Using a pastry blender, fork, or your very clean hands, combine until mixture is crumbly. Refrigerate while you prep the filling.

For the filling:

Into a large mixing bowl, combine vegan butter and all-purpose flour until well blended.

Add lemon juice, milk, vanilla bean paste, light brown sugar, ground cinnamon, and sea salt. Stir to combine.

To the mixture, add the thinly sliced apples. Toss to coat completely.

Putting it all together:

Into a prepared 8×8-inch baking dish, add coated apples in an even layer.

Sprinkle crumb topping in an even layer over the apples.

Bake, uncovered, for 30 minutes, or until golden brown and bubbly.

Allow to cool for at least 10 minutes.

Serve hot.

Cheers!
