French Onion Beef Sliders Recipe Made Vegan
These mini sandwiches were a huge hit during last year’s Super Bowl game! They have all the amazing flavor you love in French onion soup but in slider form. And the best part is that, from the beefy sandwich filling to the melted cheese and buttery glaze, this slider recipe is completely vegan and vegetarian-friendly.
Quick Pro Tip: Don’t skip the step of lining the bottom of the pan with foil because these little guys can be messy! This extra step will make clean-up a breeze.
Ingredients for French Onion Sliders
You will need the following:
- 5 tablespoons vegan butter, divided
- 2 cups Vidalia onion, thinly sliced
- 1 (14-ounce) package vegan ground beef
- 1 tablespoon vegan beef-style bouillon base, divided (1 1/2 teaspoon + 1 1/2 teaspoon)
- 1 1/2 teaspoons vegan Worcestershire sauce, divided (3/4 teaspoon + 3/4 teaspoon)
- 3/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
- 12 slider buns
- 1 1/2 cups vegan provolone cheese, shredded
- 1 teaspoon white sesame seeds
- 1/3 teaspoon dried thyme leaves
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
How to Make French Onion Sliders
STEP ONE: Set a large skillet over low heat and add 2 tablespoons of the butter. When the butter is melted, add the thinly sliced onion. Saute the onions for 35 minutes, stirring occasionally, until golden brown and caramelized.
STEP TWO: In a large bowl, combine the vegan ground beef with 1 1/2 teaspoons beef-style base, 3/4 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce, and ground black pepper. Transfer to the skillet with the onions and cook over medium heat, using a spatula to break up any large clumps, for 5 minutes or until browned. If needed, drain off any excess grease.
STEP THREE: Preheat the oven to 350°F and line a baking sheet with aluminum foil. Separate the buns into individual pieces and arrange the bottom buns on the prepared baking sheet so they are touching.
STEP FOUR: Distribute the beef/onion mixture over the bottom buns in an even layer. Sprinkle with cheese and cover with the top buns.
STEP FIVE: In a small microwave-safe bowl, use the microwave to melt the remaining 3 tablespoons of butter. Stir in the remaining 1 1/2 teaspoons beef-style base, and 1 1/2 teaspoons of Worcestershire sauce until combined. Use a pastry brush to brush the beefy butter mixture over the top of the buns.
STEP SIX: Wipe out the small bowl then combine the sesame seeds, thyme leaves, garlic powder, and onion powder. Sprinkle over the top buns.
STEP SEVEN: Bake for 20 minutes, until the cheese is melted and the tops of the rolls are golden brown. Serve hot.
