Crispy BBQ Tofu Sandwich

I like this recipe because it’s incredibly easy to make and packs a punch of flavor with minimal ingredients. The combination of smoky spices and tangy barbecue sauce creates a deliciously satisfying sandwich that’s perfect for any casual gathering. Plus, the crispy tofu texture contrasts wonderfully with the soft, toasted buns.

Barbecue tofu sandwiches can be enjoyed warm or at room temperature, making them a fantastic option for a summer picnic. The tofu remains delicious even after it cools. To keep everything fresh and avoid soggy buns, pack the tofu separately from the bread, and assemble the sandwiches just before serving.

Ingredients for BBQ Tofu Sandwiches

You will need the following:

  • 1 14-ounce block of extra firm tofu
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/4 cup + 3 tablespoons barbecue sauce
  • 3 burger buns

Ingredient Notes

  • Extra-Firm Tofu – Use extra firm or super firm tofu for the best texture. Anything softer will be too mushy.
  • Olive Oil – Helps the seasonings adhere to the tofu and adds a touch of richness.
  • Seasonings – A blend of chili powder, garlic powder, salt, black pepper, and smoked paprika gives the tofu its smoky, spicy flavor.
  • Barbecue Sauce – Use your favorite BBQ sauce.
  • Burger Buns – Choose 3 regular buns or 6 slider buns, depending on your preference.

How to Make BBQ Tofu Sandwiches

STEP ONE: Preheat the Oven. Set your oven to 425°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

STEP TWO: Prepare the Tofu. Use a tofu press to remove excess water from the block of tofu. Pat the tofu dry with paper towels.

STEP THREE: Mix the Seasonings. In a large bowl, whisk together the olive oil, chili powder, garlic powder, salt, black pepper, and smoked paprika.

STEP FOUR: Coat the Tofu. Tear the pressed tofu into bite-size pieces. Add the tofu to the bowl with the spice mixture and toss gently to coat.

STEP FIVE: Bake the Tofu. Arrange the tofu in a single layer on the parchment-lined baking sheet. Bake for 35 minutes, turning halfway through. Remove from the oven, but keep the oven on.

STEP SIX: Add BBQ Sauce. Transfer the cooked tofu to the large bowl. Add 1/4 cup barbecue sauce and toss gently to coat.

STEP SEVEN: Bake Again. Return the barbecue sauce-coated tofu to the baking sheet and bake for an additional 15 minutes.

STEP EIGHT: Prepare the Buns. Toast the burger buns, then spread each with 1 tablespoon of barbecue sauce.

STEP NINE: Assemble the Sandwiches. Pile on the BBQ tofu and serve warm.

Optional Toppings

  • Red Onion – For a sharp, slightly sweet crunch.
  • Classic Coleslaw – The shredded cabbage adds a refreshing and crunchy contrast to the smoky tofu.
  • Pickles – A layer of tangy sliced pickles for an extra crunch and a touch of acidity.
  • Grilled Pineapple – Top your sandwich with slices of grilled pineapple for a sweet and smoky flavor that adds a tropical twist.
  • Jalapeño Peppers – For a spicy kick, add thinly sliced pickled jalapeños. They bring a heat that contrasts nicely with the barbecue sauce and crispy tofu.

FAQ

  • Can I make these sandwiches ahead of time? Yes, you can prepare the tofu in advance and store it separately from the buns. Assemble the sandwiches just before serving for the best texture.

Storage

  • Leftover tofu can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Reheat the tofu in the oven or enjoy it cold. Cold BBQ tofu is delicious tossed into a salad or sandwich wrap!
