Grilled Tofu Recipe
Vegan BBQ tofu is a must-have plant-based addition to all your summertime cookouts! Load up some skewers with tofu and throw them on the grill alongside your plant-based burgers, bratwurst, and veggie kabobs. You’ll have something to satisfy everyone in the crowd!
Ingredients for Grilled BBQ Tofu Skewers
- High-temperature grilling cooking spray, or oil such as canola, vegetable, or peanut
- 14 ounces extra-firm tofu, pressed, patted dry, and cut into 1-inch cubes
- 1/2 cup barbecue sauce
Ingredient Notes:
- Grill Spray: I like the convenience of a spray and have found it just as effective as brushing the grates with oil. You can find grill cooking sprays on the baking aisle with all the other oil-based cooking sprays. If you prefer to use oil, just be sure to choose one that can withstand the higher temperatures of a grill, such as canola, vegetable, or peanut oil.
- Extra-Firm Tofu: The firmness of your tofu can make or break this recipe! Look for extra-firm or super firm; anything less will fall apart on the grill! Also remember to press your tofu. This essential step removes excess water from the tofu and makes it easier to grill.
- Barbecue Sauce: Keep in mind that the sauce you choose for this recipe will greatly influence the flavor of your grilled tofu. I happen to love Homemade Carolina-Style BBQ Sauce and that’s what I used for this recipe. It’s thick and saucy, tangy and slightly spicy… perfect for slathering on tofu or burgers, even grilled veggies!
How to Grill Tofu
STEP ONE: Oil the grates of your grill to prevent the tofu from sticking. Preheat the grill to medium heat (375°F).
STEP TWO: Thread the cubed tofu onto metal skewers. If you prefer wooden skewers, soak them in water for 30 minutes prior to use.
STEP THREE: Baste the tofu with barbecue sauce then place skewers onto direct heat of the grill.
STEP FOUR: Cook for 3-4 minutes per side (exact time may vary depending on your grill), basting with barbecue sauce each time the skewers are turned. The tofu is done when there are visible grill marks and the sauce is beginning to caramelize. Serve hot.
