Vegan BBQ Burger Recipe

Plant-based BBQ burgers are an absolute staple during the summer months. It’s an easy meal that’s always a crowd-pleaser, especially for holidays like the 4th of July, Father’s Day, and Labor Day weekend. There’s just something so satisfying about the smoky aroma and the charred grill marks on the patties that feels like summer to me.

The Best Barbecue Sauce for Burgers

That’s really up to you, my friend. Regarding barbecue sauces, there is no shortage of strong opinions on which style of sauce is best. Texas, Kansas City, Memphis, South Carolina, North Carolina, Alabama, and Kentucky… all have their merits and range from smoky and spicy t sweet and tangy.

The choice of BBQ sauce for burger patties ultimately depends on personal preference and the flavor profile you want to achieve. For these burgers, I like the smoky and robust flavors of a traditional Texas or Western North Carolina Sauce.

What to Serve with BBQ Burgers

These burgers pair exceptionally well with classic American side dishes such as Vegan American Potato Salad, Easy Vegan Coleslaw, corn on the cob, or Vegan BBQ Baked Beans. Add a cold lemonade or iced tea and you’re all set!

Ingredients for Vegan BBQ Burgers

You will need the following:

  • 24 ounces plant-based ground beef
  • 1 cup barbecue sauce, divided
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 2/3 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 4 burger buns

How to Make Vegan BBQ Burgers

STEP ONE: Into a large bowl, mix together the ground beef, 1/2 cup barbecue sauce, onion powder, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Divide the mixture into 4 portions. Roll each portion into a ball and shape into patties.

STEP TWO: Heat a grill, skillet, or grill pan over medium-high heat. Cook the patties for 4 minutes on each side, or until the internal temperature reaches 160°F, basting with the remaining 1/2 cup barbecue sauce. Remove from heat and set aside.

STEP THREE: Place your buns face-side down onto the heat source and toast for 1-2 minutes. Place cooked burgers on the toasted buns, add desired toppings and serve warm.
