Tex-Mex Ranch Dressing

This is one of those dressings that ends up being used on more than just salads. It’s bold enough to stand on its own as a dip with sweet potato fries or tortilla chips, but balanced enough to drizzle over roasted vegetables or tacos.

The combination of ranch and taco seasoning is savory, just a little tangy. If you’re already making a taco night spread, this easy recipe is a simple way to add another layer of flavor.

As a home cook focused on vegetarian and plant-based recipes, I keep a few reliable dressings in rotation—this one is always a favorite.

The ingredients are pantry staples, and the mix comes together in minutes with no extra prep. Stir it once, taste and adjust if needed, and it’s ready to serve. This dressing also keeps well, making it easy to prepare ahead and use throughout the week.

Ingredients for Taco Ranch Dressing

You will need the following:

  • Mayonnaise – The creamy base of the dressing that holds it all together.
  • Milk – Thins the dressing just enough for easy whisking and a pourable consistency without making it runny.
  • Ranch Seasoning – A blend of dried herbs and tangy base flavors that gives the dressing its signature ranch profile.
  • Taco Seasoning – Adds bold TexMex flavor with a mix of chili powder, paprika, cumin, and oregano.
  • Lime Juice – Brings in acidity to brighten and balance the richness.
  • Ground Cumin – Works with the taco seasoning to enhance the earthy, warm spice notes.
  • Garlic Powder & Onion Powder – Subtle but essential for rounding out the flavor.

How to Make Taco Ranch Dressing

STEP ONE: Combine the ingredients. In a medium bowl, whisk together the mayonnaise, milk, ranch seasoning, taco seasoning, lime juice, cumin, garlic powder, and onion powder until smooth.

STEP TWO: Taste and adjust. Adjust seasoning to taste and use immediately or refrigerate until ready to serve.

How to Make It Vegan

Use a plant-based mayonnaise and unsweetened non-dairy milk (such as almond or oat). For the ranch seasoning, use a vegan ranch seasoning mix. The remaining ingredients are already vegan.

Questions About This Recipe

  • Can I use Greek yogurt as a substitute for mayonnaise? Yes, but the flavor and texture will be slightly tangier and less rich. For a thicker consistency, reduce or omit the milk.
  • Is this dressing spicy? It depends on the taco seasoning. Most blends are mild, but spicier versions or added chili powder can increase the heat.
  • Can this be made without lime juice? Lemon juice or a splash of apple cider vinegar can be used as an alternative, although lime works best with the taco spices.
  • How do I make the taco salad dressing thicker for dipping? Cut back on the milk or skip it entirely for a thicker texture.
  • Can I freeze this dressing? No, the texture won’t hold up after thawing.
