Lemon Pepper Tofu Recipe

Cubed tofu is tossed with fresh lemon zest and simple seasonings then quickly pan-fried. This tofu is best served hot but is also tasty straight out of the fridge making it perfect for meal prepping an easy lunch at home.

I like this recipe because we’re using fresh lemon zest and simple seasonings vs. a prepackaged seasoning blend and it’s ready to serve in 20 minutes.

Ingredients for Lemon Pepper Tofu

You will need:

  • 14 ounces extra firm tofu, pressed to remove excess moisture
  • 1/4 cup cornstarch
  • 3 tablespoons lemon zest
  • 3/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil

Ingredient Notes

  • Extra Firm Tofu: Extra or super firm tofu works best for this recipe. A medium firm or softer texture will not hold up as well.
  • Cornstarch: Arrowroot powder or all-purpose flour will also work.
  • Lemon Zest: You will need 2 large or 3 medium size lemons.
  • Vegetable Oil: This is a good all-purpose oil; great for frying.

How to Make Lemon Pepper Tofu

STEP ONE: Cut the pressed tofu into 1-inch cubes. Use a paper towel to pat dry then transfer to a large bowl.

STEP TWO: In a small bowl combine the cornstarch, lemon zest, black pepper, garlic powder, and salt. Sprinkle this entire mixture over the tofu and gently toss to coat.

STEP THREE: Into a large skillet over medium-high heat, add the vegetable oil. When the oil is hot, arrange the coated tofu in an even layer. Cook for 8 minutes, turning occasionally until lightly browned and crisp on each side. Adjust seasoning to taste and serve hot.
