Homemade Sourdough Croutons

I like this recipe because it’s a great way to use leftover sourdough bread, and making your own croutons is an easy way to elevate your favorite salads and creamy soups: they add so much flavor and texture!  One bite and you will see why fresh croutons are far superior to store-bought croutons and a perfect way to use leftover bread. This recipe is also super simple to double or triple for an extra large batch.

If you want to be extra fancy and use homemade sourdough bread and fresh herbs, go for it! For convenience, I used a loaf of bread from the local bakery and seasonings from the spice cabinet. A serrated knife makes quick work of cubing the bread for baking.

Ingredients for Sourdough Croutons

You will need the following:

  • 2 tablespoon olive oil, or avocado oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon dried thyme leaves
  • 1/4 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 4 cups sourdough bread, cut into 1-inch cubes

Ingredient Notes

  • Garlic Powder – If you want to use fresh garlic, increase the amount to 1 1/2 teaspoons.
  • Dried Thyme and Oregano –  Dried Italian seasoning also works well for this recipe. If you prefer to go with fresh thyme or oregano, use 3/4 teaspoon of each, finely chopped.
  • Sourdough Bread – I have not tried this exact recipe with any other kind of bread.

How to Make Sourdough Croutons

STEP ONE: Preheat the oven to 350°F. Line a sheet pan with aluminum foil or parchment paper for easy clean-up.

STEP TWO: In a large bowl, whisk together the olive oil, garlic powder, thyme, oregano, salt, and black pepper. Add the cubed sourdough and toss to coat. Adjust seasoning to taste.

STEP THREE: Spread the coated sourdough bread cubes onto the prepared baking sheet in a single layer. Bake for 15-20 minutes, stirring halfway through the cooking time, until the croutons are golden brown.

Storage

  • If not serving right away, let the croutons come to room temperature, then store them in a zip-top bag or airtight container for later use.
