Okra Fries Recipe

I like these baked okra fries because they make a zesty and deliciously addictive snack or side dish. They’re also a unique alternative to French fries and, because the fries are so flavorful and easy to make, this roasting method has become one of my new favorite ways to cook okra.

And making okra fries couldn’t be simpler. First, the okra pods are generously coated in a blend of Creole spices, infusing them with a savory and slightly spicy taste, then they are transferred to a baking sheet.

As they roast in the oven, the okra turns crispy on the outside while remaining tender on the inside, creating a satisfying texture that perfectly complements the bold flavors of the spices.

Okra Fries Ingredients

You will need the following:

  • 1 pound fresh okra pods, trimmed and halved or quartered
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 2 teaspoons Creole seasoning

Ingredient Notes

  • Fresh Okra – Look for medium-size pods that are bright green in color, slightly firm to the touch, and free from browning or signs of damage.
  • Olive Oil – Vegetable oil also works just fine.
  • Creole Seasoning – I use Tony Chachere’s Creole Seasoning; a slightly spicy blend that includes salt, red pepper, black pepper, garlic, and various other herbs and spices.

FAQ

Can I use Cajun Seasoning?

  • Technically, yes, but it won’t be the same. While both Creole and Cajun seasonings share some similarities, such as the use of garlic and onion flavors, the main distinction lies in the level of heat and complexity of flavors. Creole seasoning tends to offer a more diverse and nuanced taste, while Cajun seasoning leans towards a bolder and hotter flavor profile.

How to Make Okra Fries

STEP ONE: Preheat the oven to 400°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

STEP TWO: In a large bowl, combine the okra and olive oil; toss to coat. Add the Creole seasoning and toss to coat again.

STEP THREE: Transfer the okra to the prepared baking sheet, arranging the pods in a single layer.

STEP FOUR: Roast for 30 minutes, until lightly browned, and serve hot.
