Mexican Tofu Recipe

I like this recipe because it’s so easy and flavorful. The tofu pairs well with a variety of sides, including Mexican Rice and Black Beans and Corn Salad. The marinade is also simple to make in about 5 minutes and it’s the best Mexican marinade for tofu because the spices combined with zesty citrus juices complement each other so well!

How to Keep Tofu From Sticking to the Grill

  • Perfectly grilled tofu is easy and achievable! The best way to keep your tofu from sticking to the grill is to prep the grill grates adequately. This means generously oiling the grates to create a non-stick surface.
  • Also, remember that tofu, even extra-firm tofu, can be delicate and should be handled with care, using a spatula or tongs to flip it gently, and only as needed, during grilling.

Ingredients for Mexican Grilled Tofu

You will need the following:

  • 1 (14-ounce) package extra-firm tofu, pressed, patted dry, and cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1 tablespoon lime juice
  • 1 tablespoon orange juice
  • 1/2 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper

How to Make Mexican Grilled Tofu

STEP ONE: Oil the grates of your grill to prevent the tofu from sticking. Preheat the grill to medium heat (375°F).

STEP TWO: Place the tofu in a medium bowl and set aside.

STEP THREE: In a small bowl, whisk together the vegetable oil, lime juice, orange juice, chili powder, cumin, salt, oregano, smoked paprika, and black pepper. Adjust seasoning to taste then pour over the cubed tofu and gently toss to coat.

STEP FOUR: Let the tofu marinate for at least 30 minutes, up to a few hours.

STEP FIVE: Thread the marinated tofu onto metal skewers. If you prefer wooden skewers, soak them in water for 30 minutes prior to use.

STEP SIX: Place the tofu skewers onto the direct heat of the grill.

STEP SEVEN: Cook for 5 minutes per side (exact time may vary depending on your grill), basting with any extra marinade each time the skewers are turned. The tofu is done when there are visible grill marks and the tofu is lightly browned. Serve hot.
