Ingredients for Almond Butter Tofu

  • 1/4 cup almond butter
  • 1/4 tablespoons tamari
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon + 1 teaspoon fresh ginger, peeled and minced
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 2 teaspoons garlic, minced
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 (14-ounce) packages extra-firm tofu, pressed, cut into 1-inch cubes, and patted dry

Ingredient Notes:

  • Almond Butter: Peanut butter or sunflower butter will also work just fine for this recipe. Obviously all three have different flavor profiles so go with what you know and love.
  • Tamari: An equal amount of soy sauce can be swapped for the tamari.
  • Ginger: Fresh is best but if you must use ground ginger, reduce the amount to 1 teaspoon.
  • Sesame Oil: Adds a second layer of nuttiness to the sauce.
  • Garlic: Again, fresh is ideal but 2/3 teaspoons garlic powder will work in a pinch.
  • Vegetable Oil: This oil is great for the relatively short amount of time the tofu needs to fry inn the skillet. Peanut oil is another good choice.

How to Make Almond Butter Tofu

STEP ONE: In a small bowl, whisk together the almond butter, tamari, water, ginger, sesame oil, and garlic until the consistency is smooth. Set aside.

STEP TWO: Into a large non-stick skillet over medium-high heat, add the vegetable oil. When the oil is hot, add the cubed tofu in an even layer. Cook, turning over occasionally, for 10 minutes or until lightly crisp. Remove from heat.

STEP THREE: Pour the almond butter sauce over the tofu, stirring gently to coat. Serve hot.
