Smoked Gouda Cheese Sauce ~
A quick and easy dairy-free cheese sauce, perfect for pouring over burgers, veggies, and loaded nachos or serving as a dip with baguette slices or soft pretzels.
4 simple ingredients are all you need for a rich and creamy sauce that beats store-bought vegan cheese sauces any day!
Ingredients for Smoked Gouda Cheese Sauce
You will need:
- 3 tablespoons vegan butter
- 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 cups oat milk, or other mild-flavored plant milk such as unsweetened almond
- 1 1/2 cup vegan smoked Gouda cheese, shredded
How to Make Smoked Gouda Cheese Sauce
STEP ONE: Into a medium saucepan over low heat, add the butter. When the butter is melted, add the flour. Whisk in the flour.
STEP TWO: Gradually pour in the milk, whisking continuously until the milk is evenly incorporated into the mix. Bring just to a simmer for 3 minutes; do not boil.
STEP THREE: Add the cheese and continue stirring until fully melted.
STEP FOUR: Keep the sauce at a low simmer, stirring occasionally, for an additional 5 minutes then remove from the heat and serve.
Can I Use a Different Cheese?
Yes! This recipe is simple and versatile!
Smoked Gouda cheese is one of my personal favorites but you can also customize this recipe for other cheeses as well.
Vegan cheddar, pepper jack, provolone, and Havarti are all delicious choices. Just swap out the smoked Gouda and you’re good to go!
Storage & Reheating
Leftover cheese sauce should be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator.
This sauce can be reheated in the microwave, stirring every 30 seconds or in a saucepan over medium-low heat on the stove.

Greta
Made the smoked Gouda cheese dip today with oat milk per the recipe as given. Covered a sheet pan of loaded vegan hot nacho chips with the dip and it was the perfect crowning touch! Shredded a package of Follow Your Heart Gouda slices and this couldn’t have worked better. Next time will try Daiya pepper jack. The sauce is very thick n tasty. Thank you for another simple but tasty treat recipe…you are my go to..
