Broken Glass Cupcakes ~
Frosted cupcakes decorated with edible homemade “glass” and “blood.”
Easy to make and perfect for a Halloween party!
These cupcakes are super fun to decorate!
You can use whatever cupcake and frosting you like – I used Duncan Hines Devil’s Food cake mix and vegan frosting from a local bakery.
Because we’re starting with prepared cupcakes, this recipe is mainly about how to make the sugar-based glass and edible blood.
Can I make these cupcakes in advance?
The edible glass is best served the same day.
Ingredients for Broken Glass Cupcakes:
- 24 prepared cupcakes, frosted
For the Glass:
- 2 cups water
- 1 cup light corn syrup
- 3 1/2 cups granulated sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar
For the Blood:
- 1/2 cup light corn syrup
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch
- 15 drops red food coloring
- 1 drop blue food coloring
How to Make Broken Glass Cupcakes:
For the Glass:
STEP ONE: Into a large saucepan over medium-high heat, whisk together the water, corn syrup, granulated sugar, and cream of tartar.
STEP TWO: Bring to a boil, stirring continuously until mixture reaches 300 degrees F (hard crack stage) on a candy thermometer.
STEP THREE: Working quickly, pour sugar mixture onto a parchment-lined, rimmed metal baking pan. Allow to cool completely.
STEP FOUR: When the glass is completely cool, use the edges of the parchment paper to lift it out of the pan. Place on a smooth surface and cover with a second piece of parchment paper.
Now for the fun part:
STEP FIVE: Hit it with a hammer! Laugh maniacally as it shatters like real glass with each whack!
For the Blood:
STEP SIX: Into a small mixing bowl, whisk together the corn syrup, cornstarch, red food coloring, and blue food coloring.
To Serve:
STEP SEVEN: Arrange glass shards on each cupcake. Drizzle with blood.
If not serving immediately, store in the refrigerator until ready to serve.
